Throughout the years, PETA has made quite an impact on how people view animal rights since the early ’80s till now. Speaking up for animals all over the nation and breaking boundaries and calling out companies that mistreat these animals they make their standing ovation in today’s spotlight.
PAST
In order to comprehend what PETA is, we have to take an in-depth look at its timeline. It all started 39 years ago when PETA made its debut. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wanted their message to get across to all that animals must be taken seriously and heard by all. When PETA was founded on March 22nd, 1980, PETA’s main focus point during their earlier stages was that they felt nobody else was doing enough to defend animals so they took a stand to make sure everyone defended animal rights. PETA’s basic principles for defending animals everywhere was that they didn’t want them to be mistreated, worn or eaten. Since PETA has been an organization all they have wanted is to see a change in the way animals are treated.
The past was a hard time for animal rights altogether it was a time of longing and a time of who cared less. Animal testing was at its peak in the 1980s with experimenting for products such as makeup to medicine. During this time, animal testing was a large target point for PETA because animals were forced into being tested on for only human purposes. (History and Timeline) When PETA started in the 1980s they questioned anyone and everyone who had or used animals in any way. PETA wanted to question why these animals were dying or going missing, and really the reason behind why a large percent of animals were being killed on average for testing. They wanted to protect and help to expose these large companies for what they really were when they said they were helping animals and were not.
The history of PETA was to seek out protection and that no one should harm or any harm should come to any animal. Before PETA ever even existed you could volunteer or donate money to organizations that helped with animals, and at this time these were really the only ways for anyone to help organizations that cared for any type of animals. PETA wanted to really be the face and name behind questioning why animals were mistreated every year. When PETA was rising and really becoming its name they became one of the largest reasons why businesses in the 1980s stopped using animals as test subjects. PETA was really large on if you buy an animal it’s your responsibility and obligation to that animal to take good care of it.
PETA in the 1980s could be brutal though when it came to their advertisement or how they demonstrated animal rights in the light of the people. When it came to animal activists talking about animal rights they didn’t want anyone to even look at an animal funny and if you ate meat you were considered a murderer. (Sherry) Yes, PETA’s tactics could be harsh but imagine if someone took your child to experiment on and killed him or her how would it make you feel? These tactics were used to convey a message and to make people understand what is happening behind closed doors. PETA did use some gruesome tactics because it’s something that isn’t used and will catch the eye. PETA thought that they had to show the people how animals are really treated and that animal rights should be a main topic at the dinner table.
PRESENT
Currently, PETA has modernized the way the world thinks about animal rights. (2018: The Time for Animal Rights Is Now) Animal rights altogether have always been a past and present battle between those that think animals deserve rights, those that think animals are infringing on their rights and those that honestly don’t care at all. Animal rights have been going on for more than a 100 years to establish a common ground for animal protection for all animals. The most modern animal movement started in the 1970s with one author that decided he wanted the people to know what was really going on, which led people to live a more cruelty-free lifestyle. (Kjonnas) Today in the 21st-century kids will lead marches for justice for animal rights across the nation. Which makes me believe that animal rights is an ongoing war that shall continue.
The time for animal rights is here and it is now, animal rights and PETA alone will further as a burning topic in everyday life including the media. Animal rights will be a topic for all and people are opening up to the idea of animal rights, and realizing what organizations all over the world are doing to these poor animals. PETA is an organization that has rescued thousands of animals from these said companies that didn’t believe these animals deserve the rights that people have fought for years to have. (2018: The Time for Animal Rights Is Now) PETA is the big reason large organizations have stopped closing doors on animal rights and giving animals a better environment to live in. From now till the future PETA will continue to expose these companies for what they are and who they are, and how they have mistreated animals.
The modern debate over eating and euthanizing animals is that it’s inhumane. A lot of the time people that believe in animal rights also believe that consuming any type of meat is also wrong which can be fought for both sides, it’s really just about if the animal is suffering for a large amount of people. (2018: The Time for Animal Rights Is Now) For 30 years PETA has been an ongoing vocal group that wants their message to be heard across the world. PETA still uses tactics that most people wouldn’t use, but they are playing on emotion to get people to stop harming and eating animals. One of the points made in a lot of arguments about animal rights is that carnivores on average will kill and eat over 8.5 billion animals each year. (Sherry) Now the fight for animal rights will or will not be an all-or-nothing fight but it will continue till they see change, because in today’s world we are capable of anything, and one thing we are capable of doing is educating ourselves enough that we change the outcome for animals everywhere.
FUTURE
In the future for animal rights, we would have to predict what is next and what has already happened. The 1990s was a big time for animal rights it was a large debate that even a comparison was made between slavery and how we as people treat animals today. (Davis) A lot of people believed that animals should not be treated as slaves to a world that has already treated them so badly. Animal testing is a large factor in why many people view large organizations the way they do, and they believe that we should continue the fight for animals. There is a large debate between people that feel animals shouldn’t be tested on and those that think what else would we test on. We as people must work and continue to show people the truth about what is really happening to these animals and then we might have a good chance of how people view things.
The future is now and it’s here for animals and humans alike. Scientists have found a way to develop bioprint which one day we will use 3D printing to replicate human organs. (Stringer) These bioprints can be a great resource to replace animal testing everywhere. These companies have already started to make prints that are helping people today. Scientists everywhere are trying to do the same and replicate what the human body does to stop animal cruelty, and all together bioprinting can eliminate animal testing in the future. All of this research will continue to help and support animals and people everywhere with the founding of new technology. The future is here and we’re all for it!
