Abortion is a moral issue because there are so many ways to explain it. Abortion can be explained in many ways depending on who you ask. Some people will say that abortion is: taking the life of an innocent human being, taking the life of a fetus, or a way people get rid of children that they did not plan for with multiple ways they got pregnant. However, before someone can try and solve the moral issue that is abortion that person must understand why each group believes what they do. When you look at the two sides of the abortion issue you see one side the says abortion is morally wrong and the other side that says abortion is not morally wrong. The people who say that abortion is morally wrong call themselves “pro-life”. They believe that abortion is always wrong with the expectations of rare occasions when it is the best thing to do. Those who believe that abortion is morally right call themselves “pro-choice”. They believe that abortion is acceptable in some circumstances. No matter what you believe the issues behind abortion do not change. The issues from a non-religious stand point include: is a fetus a human being, what gives one the right to take one’s life, does a fetus have the right to life, are a fetus and mother separate beings, if the fetus is a separate being than the mother when does the mother have control over her own body, and are there psychological and physical dangers to the mother. All of these issues must be taken in to account when deciding how to solve the moral problem of abortion.
3. Come up with a possible response to this issue. Your response should address the MORAL features of the problem. So, if you identify an issue with a business situation, for example, your response to the problem should not be only about the law or business features. It should consider the moral layer of the problem. It’s possible, for #3, you do not have a perfect solution, and that might reflect the complex reality the moral issue. If this is the case, talk about this. Maybe multiple responses are required.
I think that in order to help solve the issue of abortion people must first be willing to stop and look at the growth of an embryo to a fetus and also the procedure of abortion. They must also be willing to view it from Hobbes’s Argument. “Assume there is no God to issue commands and reward virtue; and second, that there are no “moral facts” built into the nature of things” (Rachels).
A fetus is an unborn or unhatched vertebrate especially after attaining the basic structural plan of its kind. Specifically, a developing human from usually two months after conception to birth (“Fetus”). Up until two months the fetus is called an embryo. An embryo does not have any nerves, legs, arms, or spinal cord within the first month since they are just beginning to form (live science). Most woman know they are pregnant within the first two months. While, 1 in 450 doesn't know her status until week twenty or later (more than halfway through the pregnancy), and 1 in 2,500 is oblivious until she actually goes into labor (“How Could You Be Preganant (For Months) and Not Know It”). So, based on these facts a woman should have a two-month period to have an abortion that would not kill a fetus. This would take the issue out involving: is a fetus a human being, does a fetus have the right to life, are a fetus and mother separate beings, and if the fetus is a separate being than the mother when does the mother have control over her own body.
Many people question how safe and abortion is both physically and mentally for a woman. Before a woman can even receive an abortion, she must meet with several health care providers including: a nurse, doctor, and a counselor. The doctors run a series of labs, ultrasounds, and other exams to determine how far along the woman is and to help rule out any complications that might arise during the abortion procedure. Most abortion procedures are done by using a small, hand-held suction device or suction machine to gently take the pregnancy tissue out of the uterus. Occasionally, a curette is used to remove any tissue that might have been left in the uterus or to make sure that there is no tissue in the uterus. In a study at The University of California San Francisco they found that of, “54,911 abortions studied, just 126 cases involved major complications, which the researchers defined as conditions that required hospital admission, surgery or a blood transfusion. In all, a little less than two percent of the abortions, or 1,030 cases, resulted in minor complications in the six weeks following the procedure” (Kurtzman). These results prove that abortions are physically safe for a woman to have. Now this just leaves the psychological effects that abortion can have on a woman. “Emotional and psychological effects following abortion are more common than physical side effects and can range from mild regret to more serious complications such as depression” (“Emotional Side Effects After an Abortion”). While, more woman have psychological complications there are also woman who feel relief after having an abortion. A prime example of someone who might feel relief would be a rape victim that got pregnant by her rapist. Could you imagine having to spend nine months of your life carrying and caring for a fetus that was a constant reminder of what had happened to you. But there is plenty of help for woman who suffer from these side effects after having an abortion.
So, when you sum up how to help solve the moral issue that is abortion, I believe that a woman should be allowed to have an abortion within a two-month period unless, she is able to prove that she had no previous knowledge of the pregnancy. I also believe that there are three major things that we should remember that could apply to all moral issues. First, every human being needs the same basic things in order to survive giving us an “equality of need” (Rachels). Secondly, there is ‘scarcity” (Rachels). This world is downright cold hearted and hard to survive if you do not have people to help you or the supplies. And finally, “the essential equality of human power” (Rachels). No single person has more power over another person. Every person must deal with the problems that they bring upon themselves whether they are moral problems or legal problems.
