Essay: Littering in Indianapolis

In Indianapolis, I see people toss trash out of their car, throw trash onto the ground, and have seen somebody aim for a garbage can, noticed that they missed it, and just left it on the ground. One person throwing garbage on the ground might not think much of it, however, when that piece trash collects other trash, they start to build up and soon form big loads of junk. For example, I am sure people never supposed that if they littered, that their trash would eventually end up in some kind of body of water. Typically, no one thinks about it until they actually go to a sea or lake and see how disgusting it looks because of the people who were too lazy to throw their garbage away. To worsen matters, littering has become very mutual, which must be stopped because in most instances, trash is not disposed of appropriately, which eventually leads to innocent individuals having to spend money on cleaning up. Some people know about the littering in Indianapolis, but most do not care, and that is only because they are not aware of the consequences it can bring or the way it appears to others. For the ones who do recognize it needs to spread the news around so there can be a solution.
It is clear that people, who litter, do not realize the dangerous effects they are causing or the consequences of it. For starters, debris, scattered fragments, can be carried into local waterways, which can nearly cause billions of debris to show up in the ocean each year. What most people do not see, is litter can be a severe fire hazard. For example, if someone just finished smoking a cigarette and then decides to throw the butt of it on the ground, then it is possible that the heat in the cigarette can get a hold of a piece of paper and catch fire. People, who litter to begin with, may not think these effects are damaging because it does not affect them at all when the truth is that with every little piece of trash thrown on the ground is risking them. It is common sense not to litter. The people of Indianapolis do not realize that they are affecting their own community, meaning all their friends and families, and making their environment more hazardous. If a lot of people stop littering, there would not be billions of dollars expended just on litter cleanup, meaning that the money could be spent on something more important. There is a huge problem with people spitting out their gum onto the ground which can be gross to step on, but I guess can a person could always slip on plastic wraps. According to that, not only can the gum on the ground affect someone’s pet, but also any type of trash or random edible item can. For example, if a person is walking their dog, some food or a drink could have been spilled over and if that person’s pet eats it or maybe drinks it, that could result in sickness or a shorter lifespan for that pet. From time to time, there would be raccoons or even a dog in my neighborhood digging through garbage because they find their food within the trash. They can pick up the germs and become carriers for diseases that are possible to make people sick. Indianapolis is very dirty just because of careless littering.
Litter in Indianapolis attracts negative attention, and makes the city as a whole appear bad. With trash being everywhere, it makes the people of Indianapolis seem like they do not care about the environment and its cleanliness. When people think of nature, they think of it as lovely and clean. This is not what is seen in Indianapolis today. There are bundles of trash everywhere in the streets, on the sidewalks, and other places where it should not be. Taking a walk outside should not involve stepping on potato chip bags, soda cans, or any other items thrown on the ground. When people are trying to retail their household, they want to make the neighborhood that they are located in look as neat as possible. In my own neighborhood, I have seen home retailers cleaning up the trash on their property, as well as the neighborhood trash, so it will look presentable for the buyer. Currently, people do not look forward to visiting Indianapolis, mainly because it looks run down and messy which means the city is not making any profit. If only day by day, people could pick up at least one piece of trash, it could lead to a cleaner solution.
In order terminate all of this littering; it needs to start with everybody playing their particular role in society. While it is not very enforced, littering is illegal and if people would follow the law, there would not be a problem. But for those who do not follow the law, it needs to become stricter. There should be more cops out there on the lookout for the ones who are littering, and for the ones who get caught littering, there should be more of a consequence so they know not do it again. One way a person can stop littering is simply to not throw any trash on the ground and if they know that they missed the trash, pick it up. Other ways to stop are to recycle, make sure that the trash is securely tied when sat out on trash day, or even join a community service group that helps clean up the community. This would also be a great way to open up new jobs by having people look out for things on the ground, and clean up litter at all times.
In conclusion, littering needs to be terminated all together, though it will take more than a couple of months, it is possible. With a couple of community service organizations in Indianapolis trying their best to pick up all the litter, that is a first step towards a cleaner and healthier environment. The consequences of litter are very harmful and yet, more people are littering everyday not knowing what that they are putting themselves at risk. If cops become stricter about this law and look out for more litterers, and make the punishment much stricter, I believe in the future, littering will be much more uncommon and the environment will look more beautiful.
