The two novels the fault in our stars by John green and Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson have a great impact on the society and largely to the readers. There are some comparison and differences that can be identified in these two novels. To begin with are some of the comparisons of the two novels on the common factors found on both novels. Some of these themes which are seen to dominate in both the novels include Family. In both, the novels family is seen as great factors and therefore both the authors in the film seek to explain the reason behind the establishment of the family. In the case of the fault in our stars by John Green, the kids are not wasted, but we see that there are parents around them who are aware of them and do care for them. For the case of the, another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson friendship is seen to be greatly considered as a powerful tool in the society. In this novel family is seen as a great factor bonded together by love and therefore needs to be kept.
Most of the themes in these two novels related to the simple societal elements that are largely embraced by many in the society. In both, the novels identity of the characters seems to be a greater element that is weighted and greatly exercised in several bits as seen in the novels. Most of the actors are connected to each other through either religion or family, and therefore the novels focus a lot on the personalities and the interaction of the characters. The emphasis on issues such as courage, love, and isolation as observed in The fault in our stars by John Green.
The novels are life-impacting both for the readers and the society they are living in. The novels task about the real-life struggles the members of the society undergo through and they can overcome it. Issues like deaths presented as mortality are themes within the two novels and affect the way we live as a community. The stories in both the novels express the normal type of lives we undergo as a society and the due challenges which we face, but we have to overcome that to be successful. It teaches us as a society some moral lesson on how to overcome some of our daily challenges and the elements of the society that we should consider when acting.
The characterization suits the novels relevancy to the society. Characters are faced with real-life struggles. For example, in the novel the fault in our stars by John Green, the character Hazel el Grace Lancaster suffers from cancer which is a great ordeal in life we are living today. The novel another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson characterizes the individuals to ones who are struggling to live in the bad conditioned city and the way it is influencing them. Even though the characters’ diversity is different in the novel and they are given different elements in the society they all converge in that they influence the novels perspective and message presented. The themes are well projected by the characters making the novels well understood. The characterization also makes the novels interesting to read due to the varied roles of the characters.
There is a great use of the symbolism in the two novels. Let’s take for instance another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson, the urn of Ashes symbolizes all the difficulties that August doesn’t want to face. In the same novel, Water and Sweet Grove symbolize loss (Woodson, 2016). Water is seen as a tool of rebirth or a cleansing tool. In The Fault in Our Stars, water symbolizes death as we see it recollecting in Hazel lungs due to the chancer infection. The grenade signifies the death and suffering especially to those who are close to the deceased. Augustus is described to have the behavior of putting cigarettes in his mouth but not lighting them (Green, 2012). It symbolizes the fear he has of trying to control things he fears. Suffering and society seem to be the key concepts which the authors are projected in their novels.
The discussions really helped me interact with the classmates and get to know different perspective of the story. Having formal assignments too would have been a better thought in the course of this discussion as it would have impacted us with more skills that regards to the mastery of the concepts. Having formal assignment as research papers would have kept us on the run in finding out new studies that are related to the kind of study we were to conduct. This in a way would have imparted in us the research skills that might be useful to us in the later days in life. However, the kind of discussions we had were also as helpful as the formal study assigns.
