Fate is a force that helps you achieve a destiny that you have decided to go after. In the novel “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, fate is a constant theme throughout the storying portraying a major influence on Santiago’s decisions. Fate helps an individual reach his or her personal legend because it is a guide towards your destiny. Coelho displays fate as a journey to a person’s life and personal legend, is a strong force leading a person to discovering one’s reason to be alive
Fate is an external force that assist you to attain a destiny that you have decided to followed. In the novel, the alchemist, it states it in the text, “There is one great truth on this planet: whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It’s your mission on earth.” In the previous quote, Fate is portrayed as a destined, when a person is destined for certain careers or job occupation, fate is the basis for the wanting towards that destiny. In addition, the text states, “ And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” When a deep desire or wanting towards a goal or personal legend is attained, the uniserve join forces with one’s desire to conduct your journey towards a person’s personal legend. Certainly this quote embraces fate because the universe choice is not because of free-will, fate is the strong impenetrable force directing an individual’s desire.
Fate is displayed throughout the novel, “The Alchemist” it is portrayed in many different aspects and takes an effect through Santiago’s journey to discovering his personal legend. For an instance, in the text it states, “ Maktub,” the merchant said, finally…”But in your language it would be something like, ‘It is written.” Maktub is a repeated phrase in the novel dealing with the themes of fate and destiny. Maktub is displayed as a word meaning the events are written, as in one’s future is arranged and the destiny have brought them together. Additionally, it states in the text, “The Englishman was disappointed. It seemed he had made the long journey for nothing. The boy was also saddened; his friend was in pursuit of his Personal Legend. And, when someone was in such pursuit, the entire universe made an effort to help him succeed.” During the events of this quote, this is one of the events where we see Santiago losing fate and starting to question faith and his own visuals. Although Santiago believes they have come an end, this lead Santiago to Fatima. Fate, when ones at its lowest point and starts to question if fate truly exist, Santiago finds love throughout his journey towards his personal legend.
Although Santiago does make choices of his own like the occupation he wanted to take up at a young ago, shepard, fate was destined to guide Santiago towards his personal legend. In addition, it states in the text, “ Santiago and Fatima would be happy for one year, but that during the second year Santiago would start to think about the treasure again…, Santiago would become increasingly obsessed with his Personal Legend.” This quote states that the external force of fate is the cause for the wanting or desire. An individual’s destiny is based on free-will and whether you want to pursue that journey, however the external force the assistant to obtaining Santiago’s personal legend.
Therefore, Fate is portrayed in different events and takes a major stance in the decisions of an individual’s life. When a person starts giving up and losing fate, the soul of the universe conspires to guide the soul back onto his or hers journey. Coelho uses fate as part of theme
