Chapter 5

For the lower castes there is a huge barracks, and just on the other side of the wall, there are actual houses that are reserved for Alphas and Betas.

The Gamma pilot refers to almost everything as funny. He thinks the Reservation is funny, including the dead animals that lay around. The Gamma pilot also says that says the Savages are “tame but funny”.

Chapter 7

1. Why doesn’t Lenina like the Indian guide?
The indian guide doesn’t really say much and it also smells bad according to Lenina
2. To what does Lenina compare the top of the mesa?
It reminds her of the view that you see from the Charing T Tower
3. What shocks Lenina about the old man?
Lenina is shocked by the sagging of his skin and also his wrinkles. Lenina has never seen real signs of someone aging.
4. How does Bernard try to appear strong and brave?
Bernard doesn’t follow the rules when it comes to only talking about certain things. He talks about babies, mothers, birth.. Really anything. It appears he isn’t afraid of the rules against speaking of those.

The drums remind Lenina of the same beats that were used in Solidarity, more specifically in the orgy.
6. How does the new Savage appear different?
The new Savage is different in some ways, he speaks to them but the way he speaks is strange to them. In addition to that, he also has blonde hair and blue eyes.

The Indian man is fascinated by Lenina because she is beautiful, well dressed and is clean.
8. Why is Bernard so excited with the answers the Savage gives to his questions?
Bernard gets so excited with the answers that he is getting because it made him realize that this is the director’s son.. Which means now he has some leverage when it comes to revenge on the director.
9. Why was Linda segregated and shunned by the rest of the pueblo?
She was segregated and shunned because she had many sexual partners and she didn’t use the drugs from the indians properly.

Linda might hope that she sees Bernard and Lenina, hoping they can save her and take her elsewhere.

Chapter 8

1. What is one of John’s earliest memories?
One of John’s earliest memories is being locked out of Linda’s room so pope and her can have sex.

The women yell and scream at Linda and chase her out. They do this because she had torn some threads.
3. How do the women punish Linda for her promiscuity?
The women punish Linda way to harsh and in my opinion uncalled for. What happens is the women force entry into Linda’s house, tie her down on the bed and then proceed to beat her up.

Linda doesn’t like being called mother, she Slaps John when he calls her that. From that point on John just refers to Linda as Linda
5. Why does John often turn to the old men of the tribe?
The old men often go to John to explain things because most of the time its too complicated for Linda to understand.
6. Why is John always in ragged clothes? What is his solace?
John is always in ragged, dirty and messy clothes because Linda doesn’t know how to do wash. John’s coping mechanism that he uses to avoid the fact that he looks like this is reading books.
7. What book does Popé bring for John?
He brings an old copy of a book filled with Shakespeare’s plays.
8. What does Mitsima teach John?
Mitsima teaches John how to make more visually appealing pottery and also makes a promise to teach him how to make a bow.

When John is denied the initiation rite he travels to the Mesa, sits down staring at the Moon resting in the sky and creates his own Initiation rite
