Essay: Treatment of undocumented immigrants in the US

Undocumented immigrants have the potential to be great citizens, but this immigration act puts a target on their head before they even get to show the world their valuable attributes. Immigration has been a problem since the late 1800’s. The end of the Cold War caused homeland security in the U.S. to be viewed as a state concern.(Lansford 1) The federal government increasingly focused on homeland security and its been interpreted by the Constitution as related to public health and safety.(Lansford 1) The immigration act should be abolished even though it is for the protection of the United States because it wrongfully imprisoned undocumented immigrants, causes the children of undocumented immigrants trauma, and it denies the opportunity of a better life to helpless and desperate immigrants.
On the other hand, the immigration act actually protects the country from harmful foreigners. However, The first wave of immigration came 40 years after the first initial census from 1830 to 1870 when thousands of Europeans made their way to America and integrated into communities already established by previous settlers from the same nations.(Elliott 1) The green card was created during a time when the U.S. was concerned with increasing the number and scope of immigration laws in general, but soon the first attempt to develop the first standardized immigration identification card failed. In closing, undocumented immigrants are being wrongfully imprisoned, their children are being traumatized, and they are being denied the opportunity of a better life all at the hands of the immigration act. Immigration officials are actually bullying helpless and desperate human beings who are just out seeking help. Young and innocent children of undocumented immigrants are unfortunately getting caught in the crossfire between their families and U.S. immigration officials. The immigration act is useless overall since immigrants are actually very beneficial to the American economy.
