This report documents the research/analysis, design and implementation of a website development project.
The website was developed based on the CMS, WordPress platform. A variety of techniques and technologies were applied for implementation of the website. Several elements of the chosen methodology, SCRUM, were used to support the student developing the website to meet the requirements and standard of the Client.
The Client was involved during the project duration. Client provided the specific requirements for the website. Meeting these specific requirements and satisfying the client were the most challenging aspects of the project; the flow of the process was hugely influenced by the Client, occasionally causing delays and iterative work in the development process.
The Client runs an Optical Centre business in the City and the Client wanted to have a website for two reasons: spread the word in the world for Customers to keep their vision safe, enhance the business model. Bharath approached the Client and got a permission to build the website for the Customer as part of the Project and Business.
This project involves developing a vision centric website for visually challenged people. The goal is to provide various frames of different brands, visual therapy, and eye-testing services.
The future development of the website is to provide more services based on the audience analysis and the latest technologies that are available in the market.
Introduction
The Student is studying Graduate Diploma in Information Technology in Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). Since the Student has a very good rapport with the Client in India who owns the Optical Centre business, student expressed his view as a proposal to create a website for a Client. The Client was delighted and gave a permission to create the website for his/her business. Then, Bharath decided to build the website by going through the available resources, learning new technologies.
The goal of the project is to provide a functional and user-friendly website. Users can view various frames of different brands, avail the services such as visual therapy and eye-testing. This website will also recommend the users to take at most care by following simple remedies at complex intervals. It also identifies the type of eye conditions. A few like Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism, Colour Vision, Diabetic Retinopathy, Focusing Ability, Eye Muscle Control, etc.
The main intention of the report is to record the process which include background information, implementation of the functions, project plan, and evaluation of the final outcome of the website. The future development of the website can also be discussed. The site will be developed by using HTML5, CSS3 and PHP languages. The website is built on Word Press which is based on the Content Management System (CMS). The project as a whole will be evaluated and the evaluation will determine if the project is successful and includes self outlook on the project. The future development of the website can be discussed further.
Background
I am more inclined towards helping the people who do not mind about their health, especially eyes. I always follow the statement “Beauty lies behold of eyes”. For any living being, Eyes are the most important organs in the body, next to brain and heart. I always recommend people to keep their eyes as healthy as possible by going for regular checkups, finding out any critical illnesses, recommending to affordable hospitals, etc.
Since I am a newbie, I am interested to develop and build websites based on the advanced technologies such as Bootstrap, Angular JS, and JavaScript etc.
Website development
Web development is a wide terminology to develop a website. Website development can range from developing a simple static page to a complex web-based internet applications etc. List of tasks include website development include web design, web content development, client engagement, client-server scripting, configuring the web server and network security, etc. Now, web development simply refers to creation of content management systems.
Web Development uses a number of technologies such as Content Management Systems (CMS), HTML, CSS3, BootStrap, AngularJS, JavaScript, Adobe Flash, etc
Websites use Multi-tier Architecture technology which ideally consists of
ï,§ a front-end web server serving the static content or generated dynamically
ï,§ a middle dynamic content processing and generation level application server
ï,§ a back-end database
The Multi-Tier architecture design will physically separate the system or program into multiple tiers. Multi-tier is used in websites and the common structure is the Three Tier Architecture. They are Presentation, Processing and Data Management. The separation of concern means that the Presentation layer only deals with visual elements. The visual elements in the website are ASP.NET, CSS and HTML. The Processing layer deals with functions and requests from the Presentation layer. The Data Management will handle the database and return results back to the Processing tier. If the user were to click a button, the Presentation layer will send a request to the Processing tier, which will handle the event and return a result. The Data Management tier will handle requests from the Processing layer and return data from the database. The project will follow the common Three Tier Architecture structure. The setup of website will be based and designed around the three tiers. Using Three Tier Architecture has benefits that will aid in the website’s development and when the site is active.
Role of Content Management Systems (CMS) s
The CMS has many roles in current market place and it plays an important role for any website blogging, articles, news, description of products etc. The web content management system usually allows client control over HTML based content, documents, files, and web hosting services.
HTML/CSS
Summary
HTML is the language, or code, which is used for editing and positioning the text, images, frames and other web page elements. It is not difficult to learn HTML. WYSWYG is an editor which allows you to create a webpage without using code and the editor assumes what HTML you need and does the work for you.
A CSS allows designers to be more creative and control over their designs. CSS encourages less effort by allowing the designers to create style sheets. Simply, when you edit one page, all other affected changes are automatically made. This reduces the time and efforts for designers to make multiple edits for large and detailed websites.
HTML is perfect type of coding for the structure of a website whereas CSS is used as an enhancement.
Technologies and Resources
The website will be built by using the following tools and technologies:
Programming Languages
Html5, Css3, PHP
Frameworks / CMS
Hosting the website
Servers
Alter vista

WordPress
WordPress is an Open Source project where hundreds of people all over the world work on it. It is used as full content management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins and widgets and themes. It provides a convenient UI with a reusable code for basic design. There are various templates and themes and you can customize them based on your choice.
It is the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world where millions of sites use it and it is seen by tens of millions of people every day.
Altervista
AlterVista is a free website and blog hosting platform. It offers free websites with a revenue possibility all over the world. A university student founded this company in 2000 with a capital expenditure of 15 Euros. It hosts approximately 1.7 million websites which produces monthly 7.6 unique visitors and 1.5 billion page views. It was initially launched for Italian market and later, it was localized in English. Altervista runs a revenue sharing system on online advertising. The advertisements are forcibly inserted in the hosted blogs or websites but if the webmaster wants to display them in his pages, can earn revenue based on the web traffic.
MySQL
Structured Query Language is a special purpose programming language created for managing the data in the databases and allow for stream processing and to access the data being requested. This request will be targeted to a specific database that is stored and maintained by the system. SQL includes data query, insertion, update, delete, data access control schema creation and modification. Although it is said to be as declarative language to a great extent it also includes procedural elements
Project Plan
The following activities are to be undertaken but not necessarily all at the same time.
Gather requirements from the client
An information Architecture analysis approach will be used to develop the website.
Information Architecture Analysis
Information architecture (IA) is the structural design of shared information environments. It supports usability and finds ability for art and science of organizing and labelling intranets, websites, software and online communities.
It involves a model of information that is used and applied to activities (library systems and database development) which require explicit details of complex information systems.
Meetings and Communication with the Client
Before the initial meeting with the Client, a series of interview questions were drafted for the interview. These questions were based on the website goals, user’s needs, required features and website design. (See Appendix A: Initial Client Interview – Questions and Answers)
During the initial meeting, it was mutually decided to have the meetings once in a month and then it would change to once in a fortnight, and then once a week. Student and Client didn’t miss meeting each other during the meetings without any delays.
Communication
Other communication was through emails, text messaging. Initially, email was used as a primary communication. A Google Drive folder was also created for sharing the photographs and Word documents and proved to be very useful as attaching files to emails took time to upload and there were limitations to uploading the large files in size. Using the Google Drive, large sized files were uploaded almost instantly.
Design – Information Architecture Analysis
This Information Architecture Analysis documents the content, visual, website goals, user experience, scenarios, competitive analysis, and structural design for the website.
Information Gathering
The following is largely based on the information gathered from the initial interview with the client (See Appendix A: Initial Client Interview – Questions and Answers).
Design Goals
The client wasn’t too concerned with the actual design of the website. He did however want a website that looked pretty. The colours he wanted were soft, greys, blues, greens and brown. No bright and bold colours are required.
Website Feature Goals
The main goal of the website is to spread the word in the world for Customers to keep their vision safe, enhance the business model. Having a website online will provide a way for users to purchase spectacles, frames, different brands from the Client. Currently, the client has frames, spectacles of various brands on display at different locations, where anyone can visit and purchase. Instead of individuals visiting these locations, they can go online and have a look at the products and decide to order, at their convenient locations. Shipping will be available to Customers anywhere in India and New Zealand and around the World, which will be a more convenient way for Customers to order and purchase the products.
Another goal is to provide information to the public. This includes information about frames, spectacles, vision therapy, eye testing services etc. This will provide a way of increasing exposure in the community and add more people to his professional and personal networks.
User Experience
Target Audience
Following are the audience:
ï,§ Any individual who wants to get their vision tested can visit the website
ï,§ Any individual who wants to go for eye therapy can visit the website
ï,§ Those who want to avail spectacle frames can visit the website
ï,§ Those who want to buy branded spectacles can visit the website
ï,§ Those who want to know the types of eye diseases and their treatment can visit the website
User Needs
Users are required to:
ï,§ Read information on the website
ï,§ Find out details about frames, spectacles, brands
ï,§ Look at images of brands and frames
ï,§ View details about the testing services
ï,§ View types of eye diseases
ï,§ View contact details of how they can get in touch with the Client
Scenarios
Following are the scenarios:
ï,§ A female of aged 24 years visited the optical centre for eye testing. She complained that she is having a regular headache. Her eyes were tested and proposed to wear spectacles as there is a disturbance to her vision.
ï,§ A male of aged 40 years visited the optical centre for change of his existing frames of a preferred international brand. We proposed selecting an international brand of his choice and prepared the spectacles based on his vision characteristics.
Considerations: The Client may need to consider sending the items by courier for customers who may need the product overnight and collect the money by Cash on Delivery.
Competitive Analysis
A competitive analysis was carried out to gain insight on performance, identifying the strengths and weaknesses and help determine the complete design. (See Appendix B – Layout Grids of Remaining Pages).

Website 3:
Competitive Analysis Conclusion
ï,§ Busy, cluttered websites which are unorganised make websites difficult to follow.
ï,§ Neat and simple designs work best.
ï,§ The colour scheme works well when it complements the products that are for display. It makes them more appealing.
ï,§ Information which is not spaced out properly and which have various font styles are difficult to read.
ï,§ Websites with navigation that is difficult to navigate which will not attract the users repeatedly.
ï,§ For a faster delivery, COD payment is provided.
Site Content
Home Page – This page contains the purpose of the site for the users where users can access everything within the site.
Frames & Brands Page – Displays various types of available frames and in different brands. It also displays each image in a separate page.
Your Health Page – This page lets the user know about various eye conditions in various situations and various eye testing procedures.
Specialist Services – This page displays various visual therapies that a user can undergo in treatments.
Contact Page – This page displays whom to contact, how, and where.
The above figure shows the Global navigation includes the header, the navigation menu (containing drop down lists for the Frames and Brands page, Your Health page and Specialist Services page), and footer menu).
Breadcrumbs (positioned at the top of every screen) prevent users from losing the grip within the site. It displays the page names that the user has previously clicked on; leaving a trail that will allow a user to retrace their steps, if they seem lost. If everything else fails, the header at the top of the page will always direct the user back to the Homepage, where they can restart.
Local Navigation
Links to other pages
Links to other pages within the website are required. These may be in the form of text, buttons or images that contain hyperlinks.
The Home pages will contains text hyperlinks that switches the user to various pages within the website. The Frames and Brands page will contain images, a title for each item that is available to purchase.
Visual Design
Layout Grids
Home Page
The layout of the Home page is to be neat and simple. At the top, the global header is placed. The Navigation Menu is below the header which includes page titles in the website. The content area will include the image gallery that uses almost all the content width area and below that will be the information area. This will include images of spectacles, frames of different brands. In the footer area is the footer menu which will include a sign in feature for the client to switch to the log in screen for WordPress. Below is the footer containing the copyright.
Conclusion
For concluding the layout grids, it is too clear that the layout must be kept neat and simple. Adding too much to the layout will cause clutter and it may confuse the user.
Implementation
The following describes the process undertaken to implement the website in these sections:
• Selection of a CMS
• Web hosting
• Website Development
CMS
According to Wikipedia — “A content management system (CMS) is a computer application that allows publishing, editing and modifying content, organizing, deleting as well as maintenance from a central interface. CMSs are often used to run websites containing blogs, news, and shopping. CMSs typically aim to avoid the need for hand coding, but may support it for specific elements or entire pages.”

Choosing a Suitable CMS to Build the Website
For the Vision Centre website, a suitable CMS would be easy to use and requires no coding skills at all. It must contain the necessary plugins to install the required features. The theme must be easy to customize and it must be relevant for a small website. It must have good security features and finally, it must be an open source but not paid.
WordPress is an excellent choice for the Client, who does not have any coding skills. It has all the required plugins for all the features. You can customize from thousands of themes using the child themes. Most of the plugins and themes are available for free. Because of its popularity, hackers target it, but there is plugins which can help to control libellous material which was unwilling to remove.
Drupal
Drupal is very difficult to use (out of all three CMS) which requires complex coding skills. There are various modules to install the required features. You can customize the themes from the thousands of themes. There are various security methods that safeguard the execution of modules, submitting forms, and displaying content. It is also an open source platform.
Joomla
Joomla is a slightly difficult to use compared to WordPress, but a easier to use than Drupal. It requires some coding skills. It contains all extensions to install the required features. You can customize the themes from the thousands of themes. Joomla has enormous security methods and also provide a security check articles on their website. It is available also free which is similar to other two CMS’s. See Appendix D for WordPress, Drupal and Joomla Comparison Results).
WordPress – The Chosen CMS
WordPress is an excellent choice for developing the website. It is the easiest of the three for the Client to use because coding skills are not required. It has all the required plugins that is needed to install the required features. There are plenty of themes to customise. There may be few security vulnerabilities but there is a plugin that can help and finally, it is free.
SilverStripe
According to Wikipedia, SilverStripe is a free and open source Content Management System (CMS) and Framework for creating and maintaining websites and web applications. It provides an out of the box web-based administration panel that enables users to make modifications to the parts of website that includes a WYSIWYG website editor. The main core of the software is SilverStripe Framework, a PHP Web application framework. SilverStripe is released under the terms of the BSD License. SilverStripe separates the roles of content authors (who get a rich (AJAX) web-based user interface that omits technical jargon) and website designers/developers (who write code such as CSS, JavaScript, HTML, and PHP). This provides a contrast to CMS products that allow technical website development tasks to be performed for programming frameworks that offer no out of the box content authoring application and a contrast within a GUI. The Silver Stripe approach is stated to remove complexity for content authors and offer more flexibility to developers.

Search Functionality
The website will provide a search facility that queries the database and return results for a search. The search function will be setup to allow for queries that a regular user would ask.
Database
Create a database to store the frame models, frame brands, type of eye tests, services.
Web Hosting
This section deals with finding a suitable web hosting company to register the domain and deploy the website onto the internet. The following information deals with what makes a suitable web hosting company, comparing with other web hosting companies offerings and then choosing one that will help launch the website.
What makes a Suitable Web Hosting Company?
There are a handful of matters that need to be considered when it comes to finding a suitable web hosting company. These matters are determined by the requirements of Student and Client. They should be deliberated before signing up with the provider.
WordPress Compatible: There should be compatibility to website hosting company and it should support WordPress, since the website will be built using the CMS.
Disk space: There may be constraints with web hosting companies which has a fixed amount of disk space allocated to a website per month. If you exceed the disk space, you will be charged an extra amount. Before you register, some companies allow you to pay for more disk space. It is a common practice to know all the details before you decide.
Affordability: Student and Client are unable to spend a huge amount of money and it should be affordable.
Monthly Payment: It would be more appropriate to pay a monthly fee without a fixed term contract. This makes easy for client whenever the Client takes over from the student and there is no fixed contract. If the client decides not to continue with the website and after six months, it will be easy to terminate.
Website traffic Fee: There may be constraints with web hosting companies which allow you a certain amount of web traffic and if you exceed, you will be charged extra. Sometimes, it may be unclear on how much you will be charged. Hence, it is a common practice to know all the details before you decide.
Easy to contact: You should not face difficulties finding/reaching out the web hosting company. If there is no contact number available, you must reach via email, which ideally takes a longer time to receive a reply.
Security: If the site is hacked, the Company should have excellent security model. There should be regular backups to foresee any unforeseen circumstances. Also, most companies provide users with backups to their websites.
Company Reputation: It is a good practice to sign up with a company which has positive reviews with reputation. This will save a lot of unnecessary mess if for any reason, you are unhappy with the provider.
Development
The first part of the development stage included installing and preparing WordPress.
WordPress
The latest version of WordPress was downloaded from the website, http://www.wordpress.org. The database was created within and then WordPress was installed locally. The entire installation process was pretty straightforward.

Reflection
The overall experience of developing the website has been delightful. I have learnt all the technologies that are hard to understand and I have excelled my skills to implement the website. I have built simple websites for non-commercial purposes, but while building this website, I had to think in the user’s perspective and it fetched a good knowledge about a user understanding using this website about, how is it useful, in what way a user can navigate the website, etc. This website is static and it allows navigation between the pages.
I have built the complete website with the possible resources by referring to journals, watching YouTube videos, and reading the technological websites. This is not an easy task to build the website without prior knowledge and experience. It took a substantial amount of time and effort.
Extra effort was put in the research of finding the frames and brands. It’s not so easy to gather the information about various eye diseases. But, it took more time in researching to know the types of eye testing facilities, causes for eye repair, designing the services to cater to customer’s needs.
In a nutshell, I am delighted with the prototype of the website. It matches with the expected results. On a whole, the outcome of the project is successful.
Current state of development
The website is static and it is not yet hosted on any domain. But, the complete functionality is working as expected.
Future Development
Since this website is a prototype, there may be more improvements that can be added in the future.
In the first phase, the website should be launched and it should be up and running (live). Due to less time, this website hasn’t been uploaded to a domain to make it live. By this time, anyone could have accessed and the purpose of building the website would have solved, if the website is live.
In the second phase, implementing the login facility, create a database to store the patient’s details.
The next improvement would be to develop a more complex facility for the website which is a Hospital Management System. A patient can access the website from anywhere in the world, visit a doctor virtually through a webcam, have their eyes tested in a real time, get prescription and doctor advise. This isn’t an easy task to implement the hospital management system. A group of people is required to implement to make the system perfect.
Conclusion
The purpose of the project is to develop a functional and interactive prototype website. The site was successful and with every aspect planned for the site was achieved. The first stage for construction of the site was the information architecture. The site was given a direction to focus on through the aid of information architecture. The information architecture helped to develop the ideas for the site and made sure that the site is built with the users in mind.
The process in building the individual pages such as frames and brands, eye condition, eye test, specialist services was effective. The timeline I followed was useful and allowed the tasks to be completed on time. However, the amount of information I learned about modelling was invaluable.
The technologies used were:
Programming Languages
Html5, Css3, PHP
Frameworks / CMS
WordPress
Servers
Alter vista
IDE / Text Editors
Notepad ++
WordPress document editor
WordPress Plugins Used
Animate it!
Huge IT Slider
Si Captcha anti-spam
Yoast SEO
WordPress Theme Used
Dazzling
These technologies were instrumental in developing this project. Without these technologies, the project would be incomplete and would have taken more amount of time to develop.
The site structure was based on the multi-tier architecture. This separates the presentation, logic and the data classes. The structure keeps the features and parts separated, which allows for changes without breaking the program.
Overall, the project was a massive success with nearly all the planned functions and features working. During the progress of the website, I developed new skills in Content Management System.
The final outcome of the project advanced my knowledge and experience in website design.

Conclusion
This report discusses the student’s struggle to develop and deploy a website for the Client. It is so amazing from the beginning to create a website, for Student and Client. There was a lot of effort spent on planning, designing and developing, testing the website. The Agile approach was properly implemented and it’s worthwhile, especially with all the changes that needed to be made. The student is now in a situation how to work with WordPress. He is more confident that he can create more websites in future.
Working with a Client is an amazing experience, especially when the student will have to deal with clients in a real working environment. Users will enjoy the neat design and layout and the easy navigation while using the features.
The student is delighted with the final product and has thoroughly enjoyed working. Even though, there were difficult times, it has been a wonderful experience.

Contact Lens
Contact Lens is an optical aid which is placed on the anterior surface of the eyeball (Cornea). It was first described by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1508. Bausch and Lomb, USA first marketed the soft hydrophilic contact lens in 1971.
Principle: Refractive error is corrected by contact lens which is new refractive surface over the corneal surface. This new contact lens is uniform with different refractive indices and Radius of curvature.
Materials used in Contact lens are:
Hard – Rigid Materials (PMMA) Poly Methyl MethaCrylate is non toxic, non-allergic, resistant to chemical.
CAB – Cellulous acetate butyrate, is a transparent polymer with three monomers, it is non-toxic, non allergic, and stable.
PMMA + Silicon Polymers – Silicon has more oxygen permeability, wet ability, stability is thinner than CAB.
Hydrogen Lens Materials – These are hydrophilic polymers, these are soft elastic, water, containing, gel.
HEMA – Hydroxyl Ethalic Methacrylate, absorb 20-90% of water
Silicon Clastomer Lens – Their properties in many ways are between hydro gel and thermoplastic. They are very hard in nature and hydrophobic in nature.
