The Holocaust lasted so many years and in that time 15 million to 20 million Jewish people died. This is something that is apart of history we can’t just ignore and act as nothing happened. We also think it’s important to study the holocaust so we can learn from our mistakes. We should study the Holocaust because it’s important to know how these people were treated so we do not repeat history.
We should not ignore history. History is what defines what we did who we were. Can’t pretend like it never happened like millions of Jews were never killed. Like we never mistreated Jews and sent them to concentration camps and starved and hurt them. Not to mention the years of discrimination and laws against the Jews before we sent them to concentration camps. “To be silent is impossible, to speak forbidden “ If we never talk about or study what happened all those who died in the holocaust all would be forgotten. Elie Wiesel described Holocaust survivors as those who had “emerged from the Kingdom of Night. We know that every moment is a moment of grace, every hour an offering; not to share them would mean to betray .” I recognize now that staying silent for so long did not signal a lack of strength in my father. We can not control what happened or what people decide to do in the past we can’t change history, but what we can do is teach about what happened and not do the same thing the future.
We think and many other scholars think that it is important to study the holocaust so we won’t repeat the events that happened. In a article, Eli Wiesel said he wrote night to describe the horrific events that happened. Some horrific events that happened were the smell of burning flesh also when the man tried to get an extra serving of soup and the ss officers shot him. Another event is the selection the selection was where they would have prisoners line up and call them by number not by their name because their name was taken away after they arrived at the concentration. camp instead of their name they were tattooed a number on their arm and that is what they were called now. then after you were called up an ss officer would determine if you were healthy our worthy enough to still be alive. And if you were not picked they would kill you. The SS officer would also have the prisoners on a death march that is when prisoners march a certain distance that is so far that you were going to drop dead before you got there. Eli also wanted this to be a memoir to Honor of all that died inthe holocaust.
Also, another reason for Learning about the Holocaust is important because it is a big part of world history. It teaches us about the traumatic events of World War II. It also shows what these people had to go through for just believing in smoothing . Another thing studying the Holocaust shows us what can happen when there is an individual with to much control like Hitler and other leaders. The word Holocaust means, “sacrifice by fire” and this word sacrifice by fire could not apply more to the book night . When Eli welizer first arives to Austwiz and the see the cremation and they see the smoke and smell the burning flesh. We have learned many different things relating to the Holocaust. The Holocaust is not just a word used to describe a terrible event anymore. It is spelled with a capital H and is known to everyone when someone says Holocaust we think of the terrible things that happened to the Jewish people. We should study the Holocaust because it teaches us about prejudice. We have to face sometimes in our life and hate and discrimination showed towards others. But you can also see the good of humanity by studying the Holocaust like, Eli wiser after the holocaust he dedicated his life to catching Nazi and bring them to justice. We think people should want to to to learn about the Holocaust because not because we have to. We should study the Holocaust to learn how cruelly the Jews were treated for just being human.
While we can not guarantee that studying Holocaust studies in schools or anywhere will stop us from committing genocide in the future, or even stop hatred towards others, we have seen the outcome of all those things combined. On this upcoming Yom HaShoah, on Monday, April 24th, do more than just remember. Let try to Turn the words ‘never again’ into an action.
