Biological impact of Covid-19

The two main biological symptoms one would present if suspected of having contracted COVID-19 are dry cough and shortness of breath.

COVID-19 is transmitted through airborne droplets in the air from an infected person that goes into our nose, mouth, or eyes. The virus travels down the nasal passages and start to multiply in the respiratory tract. Our lungs are the most affected organ because the virus accesses host cells via the receptor for the enzyme angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which is most commonly found on the surfaces of cells in the lungs.

When the lung tissue is infected with the virus, we will feel discomfort as the virus injures the lining of the passageways in the lungs responsible for transporting sufficient air into and from the lung. Therefore, the body responds with an inflammation which irritates the nerves in the linings of the lungs and oxygen transfer in the lungs would be disrupted, making it hard for the lungs to transport oxygen into bloodstream. Thus, we will develop a dry cough, and when there is more carbon dioxide in our body, our breathing rate will increase, leading to shortness of breath as it is difficult to breathe.

Psychological and sociological impact of Covid-19

A person diagnosed to have contracted the coronavirus might lead to psychological impacts like getting depression and having anxiety disorders, as well as sociological impacts like facing social stigma and discord between family members.

Firstly, psychological impacts like depression and anxiety are prevalent because being diagnosed with the virus causes a huge amount of stress as well as distress on the person. This is because they find it hard to cope with the fact that they have the virus and could have believed that they would be safe from the virus as they had followed all the covid measures and guidelines put in place and thus perceive their efforts to keep safe be in vain and this makes them excessively think back where or what went wrong. They might also be worried about their health condition and become overwhelmed by all their thoughts and emotions. Therefore, having contracted the coronavirus lowers their self-esteem, make them feel discouraged, fearful, anxious, and powerless, which leads to depression and anxiety.

Secondly, sociological impacts like facing social stigma and discord between family members are prevalent because being diagnosed with the virus causes a negative association with the person. They might be stereotyped and discriminated for catching the virus as other people might think that they are irresponsible people for not being able to keep themselves and others safe and are the cause of the government implementing restrictions. Thus, contracting the coronavirus might lead to them facing social stigma. They might also face discord between family members as their family members have to go through quarantine and swab tests which make them frustrated and angry that they have to go through this. This results in tension and a lack of understanding of each other’s feelings between the person and their family, causing discord.
