Gun Actually Saves Hundreds in Church Shooting
On November 5th, 2017 a gunman, Devin Kelley, open fired during Sunday Service at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas- right outside of San Antonio.
WHAT HAPPENED
The gunman, dressed in all black ‘tactical-type gear’ and wearing a ballistic vest, first began shooting outside of the church at around 11:30 in the morning. He then proceeded to enter the church and continue firing while services were still going on. A brave man, Johnnie Langendorff, who lives next door was driving by when he realized what was going on. Langendorff quickly ran back home to grab his own rifle and went after the shooter. There was gunfire exchanged between the two men, causing the gunman to be shot in the torso. Then, the killer dropped his gun, a Ruger AR assault-type rifle, and fled in his Ford Explorer. The armed citizen pursued him in his own car, and the two got into a high-speed chase. The gunman was later found dead inside his car, most likely from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
AMERICAN HERO
26 people were killed and 20 more were injured. However, this situation could have been much worse. If it wasn’t for Langendorff, a member of the NRA, who had the bravery and courageousness to confront the shooter, many more people in the church during the Sunday service could have died. President Trump commented on the situation, stating that gun control would have left ‘hundreds more dead.’ Luckily, we don’t have to imagine that scenario because a fearless man with a legal gun was able to use his weapon for what it is meant for: protection. Langendorff explained his actions to KSAT, ‘He just hurt so many people, and he just affected so many people's’ lives. Why wouldn’t you want to take him down? I was strictly justing acting on what’s the right thing to do.’ Hundreds of thousands of people across the country are praising Langendorff for his actions, calling him a ‘hero’ and ‘good guy,’ among other things.
THE PROBLEM WITH GUN CONTROL
After this shooting, ignorant leftists across the country are calling for gun control. Several celebrities, such as Stephen King, Chelsea Handler, and Josh Gad began advocating for gun control in tweets released before we even knew who the gunman was, how many people had died, or what the gunman’s motive was. People were also quick to blame National Rifle Association, calling it a ‘terrorist organization’ that is ‘drenched in blood.’ It seems very premature for people to start jumping to conclusions. Nonetheless, people quickly started to blame guns and the lack of gun control. However, what democrats fail to understand is that this shooting is not a matter of gun control, but purely a matter of mental health. The gunman, Devin Kelley, had been mentally ill for many years. According to President Trump, the shooter was ‘a very deranged individual.’ Kelley had a disgusting history with domestic violence, sexual assault, and animal cruelty, in addition to escaping a mental health facility, sending threatening text messages, and obsessing over guns and mass shootings. There is countless evidence, dating all the way back to Kelley’s childhood, that demonstrates how truly unstable he was; for example, in public school, he was suspended at least seven times for inappropriate behavior. Another example of his instability later in life was his escape from a mental health facility. In June 2012, Kelley was caught trying run from Peak Behavioral Health Services, a hospital he was admitted to after he was charged with assaulting his wife and baby stepson. Clearly, the killer was a disturbed person who had been obsessing over and conducting research on mass shootings for many years. No amount of gun control or gun laws would have been able to stop this from happening. And if that is the case, why take those rights away from other people who are going to use their second amendment right for protection or to save lives, like Johnnie Langendorff?
THE FAILURE OF THE AIR FORCE
The fact that Devin Kelley was able to legally obtain a gun is not due to flexibility of our gun laws but due to the failure of the Air Force to report Kelley’s past history with domestic violence. As stated earlier, in 2012, Kelley was charged for assaulting his wife and child. He pleaded guilty to a lesser sentence, but it was a sentence that still forbade him from obtaining a legal gun under federal law. However, in 2016 Kelley was able to pass a multiple background checks and legally obtain four guns. The killer was able to do this because of the failure of the Air Force- great job, guys! The Air Force Office of Special Investigations in New Mexico was very careless and somehow failed to report Kelley’s conviction to the FBI or the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Air Force basically handed Devin Kelley the gun to kill dozens of people. Clearly, this has nothing to do with how ‘loose’ our gun laws are, this was exclusively recklessness and incompetence by the Air Force. No amount of enhanced background checking would have prevented this situation, and this is what Americans need to understand.

The two largest Church shootings in US history were the result of the Government’s failure to enforce existing gun laws.
