Character: Describe the personality of the main character. What is    he/she like? What is his/her goal, strength, weakness?  Who are his/her helper and adversary?

The main character is Nick Carraway. He is born in Minnesota, and after studying at Yale, he moves Long Island.

He is a very good listener; therefore people tend to trust him very easily. They often tell him their secrets.

Setting: When and where does the story take place and in what kind of social environment? Be as precise as possible.

Place: The story takes place in New York City and on Long Island

Time: It’s somewhere between 1900 and 1930 that the story takes place.

Social Setting: The story takes place on Long Island. Most people that live there are very rich, they don’t have to worry about money. The main character doesn’t have very much money, his neighbours do.

Narrator:

The story is told from Nick’s perspective. Because of that, you know exactly what he knows, at least what he decides to tell you. That’s why a lot of things stay unknown for a while, simply because Nick doesn’t know either.

Theme: What is the message that the writer wants to give his readers?

There’s a very important message in The Great Gatsby. That is that money can’t make you happy. A lot of characters in the story are born into wealth. But they aren’t happier than the ones that aren’t. The writer says that the only way to gain money and wealth is by being a criminal. Jay Gatsby, who isn’t born into wealth, but gained it by some punishable acts.

Tension:

He caught my attention, and kept in further during the book because he kept a lot of information secret. I wanted to know what was going to happen, but the writer waited a long time before he explained.

He also kept my attention because he used beautiful descriptions. He used a lot of adjectives, which gave me a very clear and beautiful view of the scenarios.

Summary of your book.

Nick moves to the West Egg, near New York City. His neighbors are Tom and Daisy Buchanan, and the mysterious Jay Gatsby. In the first chapter Nick visits his niece Daisy, and her husband Tom. The talk about all sorts of thing. One of them is their neighbor mr. Gatsby. They could see him standing on his porch.

Nick goes to New York with his friend Tom. Before they arrive there, they visit Myrthe. She has a secret relationship with Tom.

Nicks neighbour, Jay Gatsby, likes to throw a lot of parties. He often invites a lot of people. At one of these parties, when Nick is also invited, Nick gets in a conversation with Gatsby and Jordan. They decide to meet again, the next morning, on Gatbys new boat.

In the fourth chapter, Nick and Gatsby go to New York together. Gatsby tells Nick about his history, and about what happened in the war. When they finish dining in New York, and they get up to leave, Nick sees Tom. Nick wants Tom to meet Gatsby, but Gatsby has left, without saying anything.

According to Jordan, Daisy used to be very populair and pretty. During that time she was in love with Gatsby. But he had to leave, because he had to fight in a war. Daisy was heartbroken. A year after that she meets Tom, and they get engaged. Daisy doesn’t know Gatsby wants to meet her again.

Nick and Gatsby set a date for Daisy to visit. When Daisy and Gatsby meet, they talk for hours. Gatsby shows her all kind of things around his house.

At Gatsbys last party, Daisy, Nick, Jordan and Tom are also invited. Daisy and Gatsby dance and talk all night. This pisses Tom of. He wants to know who that man (Gatsby) is, and where he’s from. That’s why Tom and Daisy leave quit early. Gatsby and Nick stay and talk for a while. Gatsby want Daisy and Nick to divorce, because he wants to marry Daisy.

Nick, Jordan and Gatsby visit Tom and Daisy. Gatsby and Daisy act very close. Tom sees that Daisy’s in love with Jay Gatsby. All of them go to New York. They go to a hotel, they meet each other in a room to talk. Jay want Daisy to tell Tom she wants to divorce him. Tom and Jay get in a fight over Daisy. After a while, Gatsby and Daisy leave.

When Tom and Nick pass by Myrthes house, they see something’s wrong, they hear a lot of people screaming. When they get inside, they see Myrthe lying dead. She was hit by a car, the car didn’t stop, he drove away. It was said to be a yellow car (=Gatsbys car).Wilson, Myrthes husband, found out about Nick and Myrthes secret relationship, he locked her up in her room. At one point, she got out, and ran over the street. She wanted the yellow car to stop for her, but he didn’t. When Nick sees Gatsby that night, Gatsby explains that Daisy was very confused earlier that day. He thought driving would make her calm down. Daisy was the one who hit Myrthe.

The next day, Wilson found out that the yellow car belonged to Gatsby. He stops at his house. When Nick arrives home from work, he goes to Gatsbys house. He asks a servant where Jay is. He says that he hasn’t returned from the pool yet. Nick decides to check on him, at the pool he sees Gatsby dead. He then sees Wilson, also dead. Wilson first shot Gatsby and then he shot himself. At Gatsbys funeral, there aren’t as many people as Nick expected. All the people that often came to his parties, now, were know where to be found.

At the end of the story, Nick moves back to the east. Tom and Daisy got back together. They are very rich, and buy what they want.
