How Love and Hate will lead to Romeo and Juliet’s fate
William Shakespeare once said, “Love me or hate me, both are in my favour. If you love me, I’ll always be in your heart… If you hate me, I’ll always be in your mind.” William Shakespeare’s novel, Romeo and Juliet, introduces an in depth and more focused point of view on love, but this in many relations of the book has lead to a strong despisement. The Capulets and Montagues, two families divided by bloodline, have begin to grow more peaceful, this has all began to change with the showing of love between the fair Juliet and lover, Romeo. Romeo and Juliet decide to marry, which shakes the families feud even higher, with the cousin, Tybalt, hearing of this, the families feud has suddenly gotten stronger. Their tragic end begins a more peaceful revolution, but has tragedy coming through the hearts of readers all around. In Romeo and Juliet, there is a strong sense of love from the beginning to the end of the book, but this love eventually leads to hate. In the long run, the story of Romeo and Juliet has had love “camouflage” a sense of hate that was hidden amongst the passionate story.
Romeo and Juliet is a story with enormous amounts of passion, but this love/passion leads to hate, our first example of this is with Tybalt and Romeo. Tybalt says, “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford No better term than this: thou art a villain.” This proves the thesis by showing that Romeo’s love with Juliet has led to hate deep inside her family, like with Tybalt. Tybalt later says, “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, A villain that is hither come in spite…” This proves the thesis mostly because of the location of Romeo and Tybalt. When Tybalt sees Romeo getting very close to Juliet, he gets angry and tries telling Capulet to get his sword so he can slay Romeo. Tybalt is getting jealous. Romeo and Juliet’s hate can easily be seen through Tybalt, but there are others that are also affected by their love.
The story of Romeo and Juliet has many people to begin hating Romeo after their love, another example of this happening is with Lord Capulet. Lord Capulet says, “Content thee,gentle coz. Let him alone.He bears him like a portly gentleman,And, to say truth, Verona brags of him To be a virtuous and well-governed youth.I would not for the wealth of all the town Here in my house do him disparagement.Therefore be patient. Take no note of him.It is my will, the which if thou respect,Show a fair presence and put off these frowns,And ill-beseeming semblance for a feast.” This shows that in the beginning of the story Capulet is fond of Romeo, a montague, in his house, and does not mind him at all. This all changes with the introduction of Tybalt’s death. We can see this later when Lord Capulet says, “Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!I Tell thee what: get thee to church o’ Thursday,Or never after look me in the face.Speak not. Reply not. Do not answer me.My fingers itch.—Wife, we scarce thought us blest That God had lent us but this only child,But now I see this one is one too much And that we have a curse in having her.Out on her, hilding!” This shows Lord Capulet’s infatuation with Romeo, the killer, and shows that he is very angry even though we can truly see that Romeo has love with Juliet. This point is good to prove a way of love leading to hate in Romeo and Juliet, by showing Lord Capulet ,a very important character, being okay with Romeo to despising him.
Another very important person in Romeo and Juliet, that has a change from love to hate is Lady Capulet. Lady Capulet is a very important character and in the beginning has no issues with Romeo, like Lord Capulet. We can see this when she says, “What say you? can you love the gentleman? This night you shall behold him at our feast;…” This shows that Lady Capulet is very fond of Romeo at first and has no problems with him at all. This all changes right after the murder of Tybalt. After Tybalt is murdered Lady Capulet says, “That is, because the traitor murderer lives.” Lady Capulet announces Romeo as traitor, because she remembers him from the ball and when he murdered Tybalt, she got very angry and denounces her revenge on him. Lady Capulet is a good example of how a love for a character like Romeo went from good to bad in a matter of scenes.
The way that the reader sees Romeo and Juliet is mostly based on passion and love being a source of living. But, if you go deeper into the story you can see it is a tragedy with many love to hate relationships coming and going from time to time. This helps convey a deeper mood to not only show sadness, but show emotion with full out depression. The story of Romeo and Juliet has had love “camouflage” a sense of hate that was hidden amongst the passionate story.
