Reduce Global Warming
This essay will be presenting reasoning for a bill in act to reduce Global Warming. As proven by many climatologists, global warming is a major factor in climate change and if action is not taken soon it will become too late. Based on research, three main reasons have been accumulated to provide description on why this bill should be passed. The first reason of this bill is because Global warming has caused major climatic changes in certain regions and it is because the earth is warming up and making the ice caps smaller and deserts increasingly dangerous. Secondly natural disasters are becoming increasingly stronger and more frequent as proved by the World Meteorologist Organization. The final reason for this bill is because of disease spreading. The earth heating up has caused more habitable climates for bugs and many of them are disease filled.
Global warming has caused some major climatic changes in certain regions specifically Africa. In a visit to the Turkana region of Kenya by a research scientist he stated that after speaking with a local the region has been facing increasingly longer droughts at unusual times. There are also some changes in regions in the U.S. such as the south west region of the U.S. although areas around the Rocky Mountains such as Arizona, Colorado,Nevada, and California are prone to wildfires they have become increasingly more common and much larger due to dryer conditions. A study conducted by Anthony LeRoy Westerling, an associate professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of California Merced, surveyed results that show over the decade through 2012 large fires(fires greater than 1,000 acres) were 556% more frequent than in the 1970’s and early 1980’s (Wildfires in West Have Gotten Bigger, More Frequent and Longer since the 1980s). According to the W.M.O. February of 2016 was the warmest February on record and the rest of 2016 wasn’t far behind their own record months. The W.M.O also recorded that 2015 was the was the warmest year on record and as stated previously 2016 wasn’t far behind.
Natural disasters are a big cause of poverty in certain countries because of the strength and frequency of them. In struggling countries such as Haiti, Costa Rica, Philippines, and other nations natural disasters can cripple the infrastructure and economy making it even harder to develop and recover. According to Gallup surveys from 1980 to 2012 natural disasters caused nearly 3.8 billion dollars in economic loss and claimed 1.4 million lives. According to the NASA earth observatory global warming can cause the temperature in between the poles to decrease which will cause more frequent and dangerous storms across and near the equator. This can also be described by saying when the earth heats up it fuels hurricanes and other large storms. In dryer areas the sun can cause extreme heat index making it even harder to cross deserts and starting more wildfires.
Disease is the next effect of global warming and it is because, like previously described, when the earth heats up it makes wetter and humid places more habitable for disease filled bugs. Warm weather is increasing the number and range of ticks, midges, and mosquitoes–those that carry human disease, such as dengue fever, and those that don’t but still kill wildlife and animals. Crop damaging viruses are spreading north, threatening food security. Waterborne human viruses may spread. Scientists aren’t yet certain how disease-carrying rodents, such as rats and mice, are responding, but one thing is clear: Animals and plants are migrating to new areas and trying to adapt with species they’ve never encountered. That can spread existing diseases and let new pathogens thrive. The effects in already disease prone areas will be catastrophic if global warming is not fixed.
Some may argue that global warming is natural and is human activities have nothing to do with it. There are two main arguments that opposers have against this bill and one of them is “Earth’s climate has always warmed and cooled, and the 20th century rise in global temperature is within the bounds of natural temperature fluctuations over the past 3,000 years”(Is Human Activity Primarily Responsible for Global Climate Change?) The next reason is “Rising levels of atmospheric CO2 do not necessarily cause global warming, which contradicts the core thesis of human-caused climate change.”(Is Human Activity Primarily Responsible for Global Climate Change?) Some people may think that earth’s climate has always warmed and cooled and this is because within the last 3,000 years there have been many temperature changes that have well exceeded what they are now. Another argument opposers have is that rising co2 levels in the atmosphere doesn’t necessarily directly connect with global warming. Reason being is because over 400 million years ago Co2 levels were five times higher than they were now. This is because the earth was not yet fully developed and there was not much sustainable life that could adapt to the climate either. This is now a problem because since the earth has been stable and has developed enough to be habitable for life there have not been many major temperature changes until now.
In conclusion because of global warming causing major climatic changes, natural disasters becoming stronger and more frequent, and diseases becoming more common this bill to reduce global warming should be passed. The major climatic changes in regions such as Kenya, southwest U.S., and the poles will eventually turn catastrophic if nothing is done soon. Natural disasters are becoming much more frequent and stronger for example in areas like the Caribbean, deserts, and coastal cities these areas can eventually be ruined by storms if the temperature of the earth is not reduced or at least leveled out. Finally, diseases are becoming more common in areas around disease prone bug areas because of the warmth attracting more bugs.
