Abstract

ABSTRACT: Many times, in our city we see that the garbage cans or dustbins places at public places are overloaded. It creates unhygienic conditions for people as well ugliness to that place leaving foul smell. To avoid all such situations we are going to implement a project called “INTELLIGENT GARBAGE CAN”.

Also, trash has become a problem in the society and the ecosystem due to the way people get rid of it. Some people directly throw all kinds of the garbage into the same can without even segregating it. Whereas some find it difficult to even throw the garbage into the can. So, our project aims at solving the above problems to an extent.

These dustbins are interfaced with microcontroller based system having IR wireless systems along with central system showing current status of garbage on LCD, on mobile web browser with html page by Wi-Fi. The major and most important feature of this project is that is capable of segregation biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

Which ultimately aims at reducing human resources and intensive manpower along with enhancement of a smart city vision.

OBJECTIVE: To avoid all such situations we are going to implement a project called INTELLIGENT GARBAGE CAN based on IoT. Implementation is done with the help of  IoT concept. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept in which surrounding objects are connected through wired and wireless networks without user intervention. Objects communicate and exchange information. In this system multiple dustbins are located throughout the city or the Campus, these dustbins are provided with a sensor which helps in tracking the level and weight of the garbage bins  and informs the nearest authority in-charge via GSM so that it can be emptied as soon as it gets filled.

Once the bins are full then user will not be able to access the bins. In such circumstances the bin displays the direction of the nearby bins on LCD display.

In this project we are to design and build a prototype for an automatic open dustbin that can automatically open the lid when it detects the people who want to throw out their trash. It also can detect the level of the trash that inside the dustbin. If the dustbin is full of trash at the certain level, the lid will not open even when there are people who want to throw out their trash.

Chapter 1

OBJECTIVE

1.1 To avoid  situations like overflowing of garbage from the garbage can.

1.2 Difficulty in locating nearby dustbins when nearest one is completely full.

1.3 To reduce manpower by automatic segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

1.4 To make a dustbin with automatic lock system when the dustbin is full.

1.5 To inform nearest authority in-charge via GSM or Wi-Fi module.

1.6 To implement a project called INTELLIGENT GARBAGE CAN based on IoT.

1.7 Once the bins are full or it has reached it’s threshold level then user will not be able to access the bin to avoid overflow of garbage. In such circumstances the bin displays the direction of the nearby bins on LCD display.

1.8 In this project we are to design and build a prototype for an automatic open dustbin that can automatically open the lid when it detects the people who want to throw out their trash. It also can detect the level of the trash that inside the dustbin. If the dustbin is full of trash at the certain level, the lid will not open even when there are people who want to throw out their trash.

COMPONENTS

1 IOT

2 Aurdino UNO

3 Motor driver: To drive the steel plate in the segregation process.

4 16*2 LCD Display: To display the status of the dustbin.

5 IR Sensor (TSOP 1738): This IR Sensor gives indicates the level of garbage filled in dustbin and IR Sensor are planted at three different levels on the surface of dustbin to show us the actual level of garbage present in it.

6 Weight sensor: The weight sensor is used for detection of amount of garbage in dustbin. It works on the principle of piezo-resistivity. It is RoHS complaint.

7 X-Ray: X-Ray penetration will help in segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

8 GSM: To send the SMS to the nearest authority in-charge.

9 Wi-Fi Module: 802.11b/g/n protocol, Wi-Fi Direct (P2P), soft-AP, Integrated TCP/IP protocol stack. Wi-Fi Module helps us to send the details of the dustbin at the receiver side.

10 Power Supply

Chapter 4

TEST CASES AND RESULTS

1) Dustbin when empty – 0% (when 1st level IR Sensor gives output )

2) Dustbin half – 50% (when 1st level and 2 nd level IR Sensor gives output )

3) Dustbin full – 90% (when all three level sensors gives output )

4) Dustbin is heavy- when threshold weight of dustbin is crossed (weight sensor gives output)

EMPATHY MAKING CANVAS

Empathy is the ability to share another person’s feeling and emotions as if they were your own. The canvas consists of domain analysis. After working on the domain we find our users and stakeholders.

USERS:-

• Public

• People in Colleges and Schools

• Stakeholders

• People at tourist places and picnic spots.

• People at Hospitals

STAKEHOLDERS:-

• Government

• College authorities

• Hospital authorities

• Tourism authorities

Story Boarding:

1.HAPPY STORY:

There was a picnic spot in Gandhinagar where people around the city use to come and enjoy. Since, there was lot of food packets and lot of left over foods too. Suddenly people came across “INTELLIGENT DUSTBIN” with automatic segregating  system which made their experience more interesting .

2.HAPPY STORY: There was a manufacturing factory which was suffering from a problem of segregating their factory’s waste. They came across “INTELLIGENT DUSTBIN” which proved as a boon to them and helped them with segregating their waste in a better way.

There was a farmer who had no time for his family and wanted a small vacation. The reason he had no time was he was worried about his farms. So he came across this device and was really happy that due to it he could spend some quality time with his family.

3.SAD STORY:

There was a huge dustbin in a locality which always use to get overflowed with garbage, nearby people still use to empty down their household garbage in that dustbin. Due, to which small animals like rats and insects started decaying around it which caused foul smell and unhealthy conditions for the surrounding people.

4.SAD STORY:

Once there was this famous hospital in a city  which faced  a major problem of segregating waste since hospital has many kinds of waste that is needed to be thrown separately. Due, to which they faced unhygienic conditions for patients and other working members of the hospital.

AEIOU SUMMARY

Our project can be improvised after its first implementation and making different surveys around the users and stakeholders. After talking to some of our own gardeners and people from nurseries we can make the following inclusions only after out first implementation is successful;

Webscrapers can be added to this model to predict the weather and water the plants accordingly.

Sensors for pest controls can be used to monitor the pesticides.
