According to the research and survey entitled “Barriers to Online Learning in the Time of COVID-19: A National Survey of Medical Students in the Philippines” (Baticulon, et al., 2021), it has been stated that only the few 41% of the students were physically able to do online learning, and the problems stated were the students had a hard time to talk and to reach out to their teachers to ask questions, to adjust to the new learning environment of online learning, having to multitask school work, more household chores etc..
As the students have to do house chores and school work more due to them staying in their homes for a long period of time rather than in face-to-face classes, they may be stressed, feel pressured to balance both school and home life or activities. The most important part of online learning is the internet and at times, it may slow down or disconnect and it may make the student miss out on the lessons. When a student misses out on lessons, they may not understand the topics that are being taught and some of the problems that were raised by people are that the students cannot communicate with their teachers during online learning than the normal face-to-face classes.
There have also been issues of students that are not able to or are limited to have the materials needed for online schools for instance computers, tablets etc., they have limited information about gadgets as well as the poor connection of the internet at times (Baticulon, et al., 2021). Due to these reasons, the student may be left behind or the student may not be able to understand the lessons and also, they may also lose motivation in school as well as studying.
It has been stated in a research entitled “LEARNING STYLES, STUDY HABITS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FILIPINO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN APPLIED SCIENCE COURSES: IMPLICATIONS FOR INSTRUCTION” (Magulod Jr., 2018), there has been a survey conducted and was answered by students on the differences in each student’s ways and their preferences in learning. It also states that if the students follow their learning preferences as well as their study habits may be able to learn better.
As for online learning, there is a difference with the way the teachers are educating the students than in face-to-face classes and with this information gathered, it would probably be better if the students are able to study in their own way to feel more motivated and productive. Moreover, the students may also be able to study better as well as their productivity could possibly increase and be at a higher level.
There have also been some problems about the limitations to the subjects taught during online learning. As stated in the research “THE STATUS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE E-LEARNING CLASSROOM IN SELECTED HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN REGION IV-A AMIDST THE COVID-19 CRISIS” (Reyes-Chua, et al., 2020) English, Social Studies, Marketing may be taught online but whereas for Mathematics, it is difficult for the teachers to explain and educate to the students about solving as well as the formulas.
Due to the reasons of the subjects taught during online learning are limited, it has raised concerns to both parents and the students as online learning might not be effective as normal face-to-face classes. It has also been stated in the same research, in connection to the previous study stated earlier, the teacher’s motivations levels and their ways of teaching are important to make the students feel motivated in both online and normal face-to-face learning.
A 2018 study has stated that senior high students have been more independent through learning with the internet, the students also increase their information with the help of the internet. It has also been said in the same research the students that have been surveyed answered that they use the internet as well as their phones to be able to communicate with their friends rather than using it for an educational purpose (Baguia & Moneva, 2018).
For that reason stated, when the students use their gadgets during online learning they may feel easily distracted as they can access anything with their laptops, computers etc. when doing online learning as well as the students may also be distracted while doing their schoolwork making them lose concentration, motivation and productivity.
