I want to coach basketball, specifically high school boys’ basketball. I used to play a little basketball when I was younger, but I feel like for basketball, I have the knowledge of the sport and I want to help young men develop and become a better person in life. I want to coach those young men based on my coaching objectives in order; winning, developing, and having fun playing the game.

I focus on winning because I know that colleges will look at programs that had a winning season when looking for players, because they want players that have experience winning and has the talents and skills to do what it takes to succeed at college.

I believe that winning can improve the program and improve the development program for the basketball players in terms of workout programs, nutrition programs, and it would be enjoyable to the players as they have fun while winning and bonding with their teammates. They would experience winning and understanding what it takes to be disciplined and be a successful athlete and as a person in life.

Every coach has their own different set of coaching philosophy according to their beliefs. Each coach follows their set of beliefs when developing their own philosophy for the team. The first part to developing my philosophy is I want to follow cooperative coaching style. I want to be able to work with the basketball players giving my knowledge of the game and being able to develop the players IQ of the game to an understanding that the players will think like I do. I want to be a mentor to the players and be able to provide teaching moments for the players to learn. I would include the players as part of my game plan as we strategize and explain why we do this drill and why we have to do this situation to prepare against our opponents. There will be time when I will get frustrated, but I always have to keep my composure and calm in front of the team as we move along. When it is crunch time during the game I will have to take over the game and become a command/cooperative coach and let the players trust me as I will trust in their ability to win the game and tell them what the play is. I believe that being a cooperative coach will help my players become better not as athlete but also as a person and be able to transfer my knowledge of the sport to them.

Diversity is part of basketball with so many diverse players in all levels of the sport. Typically, people will look at a player based on his skin color, or the way they look or where they come from. They tend to place stereotypes on them and limit their view on the player and the potential that they have. It is important for me to have an open minded and to always have the opportunity to learn and build relationship with my players so that I can better understand their background and I would learn how to coach them.

Athletes has their own personality regardless of where they come from, each athlete is different. Some may be quiet, some can be loud and proud, some can be leaders, some are followers. Whatever the case, each player has their own personality and characters that they bring to the team.

My role model that influence me in coaching would be Jimmy Valvano. He used to coach for NC State back in the 1980s when they won the National Championship in 1983. Jimmy Valvano was a well-liked and a well-respected coach, from the first day he was hired he had a vision that NC State would win a championship. At first the players thought he was crazy, but the more they practice, the more they bond with Valvano, the more they. Started listening and believing in Jimmy V. He used a cooperative style coaching and his philosophy in coaching was to have fun and love and respect each other as teammates. He built relationship with his players and became their father figure in college when they needed someone to talk to. Jimmy Valvano was also a motivator to the team, when the team felt like they had no chance to win, Jimmy would fire them up and give them a pep talk not just as a team, but to each individual. Sparking a fire inside the players they would play their best game for Jimmy because he knew what to say and was very careful in how to say to his players. After he retired and soon found out he had cancer, he told each of his players that he loved them, and his players loved him back. He follows a set of beliefs which is every day to, laugh, spend time in thoughts, and move your emotions to tears by happiness. His set of beliefs and philosophy and with his coaching style, I want to follow his way of coaching when I become a coach in the future. I want to be a coach where I am respectful, care about my players, and earn the players trust as I trust them.

As far as communication skills with my athletes I know I have to be a coach that is willing to listen to his players, give feedback when necessary and do not overdo it. Nonverbal communication is important as it is communicated from you to your athletes 70% of the time. You want to give feedback and instruct your players whether they are doing their drills right or need to work on their skills, you give them feedback rather than going with a command style coaching and lower their self-worth. You want to give feedback and explain why we do this drill, what is the purpose and how it transitions into a game situation. Nonverbal is important because it gives players an understanding of what you’re feeling, whether you smile or get frustrated, the players will understand how you’re feeling rather than being stoic and the players would feel uncomfortable around you.

In terms of motivating my athletes, I have to understand two important needs for an athlete to stay motivated, to have fun and to feel worthy of being on a team. I have to understand what optimal arousal means for players, I have to be willing to adjust practice to where it is challenging, and new while setting the difficulty to where they can be successful giving them confidence before I raise the difficulty. It is important to change practice up so that the players will never get bored and enjoy practices. One thing that I can do is to instill more game situations in practice so that they can compete and have fun, but also learn what to do in game situations. You want to give them a flow experience so that for them, time goes by faster, everything is going right, and they are not bored or anxious. I have to be careful not to over arouse the players because if it gets to that point, they will become more anxious and will fail more than they succeed pressing their self-worth down.

I want to develop my players into a success-oriented player where they: uses failure as motivation to work harder and take credit for win and accept responsibility for loss. Whereas, a failure-oriented player attribute failure to lack of ability, success to luck or weak opponents, and feel powerless to change their plight. I want to be able to help my players get motivated and become more success-oriented, so that they can have that mind set to be successful on and off the court.

For my disciplinary approach, I would treat everyone equally and fair when having to punish a player based on the situation. I want to use positive discipline to teach the players lesson in understanding what is to be expected of them. In order to develop discipline, you have to have the right team culture order to develop team discipline. Also, you have to develop team rules and code of conduct for the team to follow, and if a player were to break a rule, they would have to face consequences for their actions.

Team routines can help reduce time instructing like: stretching, warm-up, seat on bench. Have game activities to help reduce boredom and excite players, thus, increasing optimal arousal for the players.

When building a relationship with the team and bonds, you have to know when to draw the line and set the boundaries as far as what is appropriate and inappropriate. It is important to have coach-player rela
tionship where a player can look to you for help either on court or about life situation. You want them to be able to come to you because that means that they trust you with your knowledge and your advice that you can help them out. You want to be a role model for the players to follow and look up to. When it comes to social media, it is often better not to add your players or students to look up at your private life and embarrass you as a coach when you have to be the authority figure and your actions speaks louder than words.

I have typed down a general set of rules that I expect my athletes to follow and understand the expectations for them to follow.

o Apply for tryout if you want to try out for the team

” Have physical form filled by doctor

o If made it to the team, will have meeting the next day with players and parents

o Day after meeting will have first team practice

o Drugs conduct/policy will be by school rules

o Must have at least 2.3 GPA to participate in team activities

o Practice will be from 3-5pm from Monday to Friday

The general rules allow me for the players to read and understand what is expected of the program like schedule, academic, rules, policy, tryouts. I will have a letter typed to parents of release form and contract for their child to participate as part of the basketball program. I will write down expectations of the student-athlete and that they should follow rules, if unable to follow rules or misbehavior is continuous, there will be consequences for their actions, even as far as being kicked off the team. I am a mentor first, coach second. I will help student-athletes be successful on and off the court, I will instill discipline to the players as far as rules goes. If the players can stay with me as a coach for the next four years, I promise I will do everything in my power to ensure that they can continue playing at a college level and get a free education and knowing that they will be successful in the future.

The list above shows the cost of equipment, hotel rooms, food, travel, clothing for the 2018-2019 season. We plan to raise money by having boosters club, fundraising, host events, tickets sales, and school budget including us. As you can see the total cost estimated around $23,750-$24,050. If we get at least $25,000, that will give us some room to adjust and save some for the season after.

For the Preseason I plan to develop a workout program putting emphasize on flexibility and conditioning, so that the players can stay loose and reduce injury while getting in shape for the upcoming season. I want to develop a nutrition program in three topics: lose weight, maintain weight, gain weight. Lose weight is for players who are a little overweight and must cut back on carbs and eat more protein and vegetables and less calories. To maintain weight, they eat some carbs, equal number of calories for their body to consume a day and protein and vegetables. Weight gain, those are for players who need to bulk up and get stronger which emphasizes on heavy carbs, heavy protein and heavy vegetable, eating more calories than your body needs to consume as it will feed the muscles. After the season ends, we will have two weeks off for the returning player’s body to recover from the season and check with doctors for any lingering issues.
