The company was founded in july 2008. There are various subsidiaries of kiwirail, these are: Tranz metro, Scenic journey, interisland line and Kiwirail freight.
Before the invention of kiwirail the rail transport in new Zealand was under private as well as under public ownership. Government owned departments were new Zealand railways, public works department and new Zealand corporations. But in 1993 it got privatised and renamed as Tranz rail in 1995. Due to some issues the government take over the control in their hand and named as ONTRACK. But finally in 2008 two companies merged kiwirail and ONTRACK to create one company and start operating in ferry operations as well as rail infrastructure(Annual report 2008-2009).
